Dental Checks and Teeth Cleaning

Regular dental checks and teeth cleaning are key to long term oral health.

Our focus is on your long term oral health. Not only will a healthy plaque free mouth mean that your teeth will last longer, it also means that the dental work you have invested in your mouth will last longer. We all want our treatment to succeed. Our Brisbane Dentist in Spring Hill can achieve this by helping you keep your mouth in excellent health.

How Often Should I Visit the Dentist?

Everyone is different. We usually advise 6 monthly examinations and cleaning. Sometimes the dentist may suggest more frequently or less frequently depending on your oral health risk. Factors such as lifestyle and diet will determine your risk of cavities and gum disease. If you are very susceptible to high levels of plaque and calculus build up, are a smoker or feel that you are unable to perform adequate oral hygiene measures at home, we recommend you visit for a dentist scale and clean every 3 months. This can then be gradually stretched out to 6 months, as you learn to excel at your hygiene programme.

How Often Do I Need Dental X-rays?

Factors such as lifestyle and diet will determine your risk of cavities and gum disease and help us determine how frequently we should take x-rays (known as radiographs). Sometimes it is yearly and other times it can be as much as 2 to 3 years. The higher the risk of cavities and gum disease, the more frequently the dentist advises radiographs, but if you are a fluoride kid and have had little problems with your teeth, it is very safe to extend the time between radiographs.

What to Expect at Your Dental Check and Dental Clean Visits?

Full comprehensive examination
We check your entire mouth, teeth and gums for any signs of cavities, gum disease or another problems such as broken or damage fillings.

Oral Cancer screening
Our dentist is trained in screening for oral cancer and can perform a biopsy if required. Your cheeks, lips, tongue and floor of the mouth are some of the common areas that we screen.

X-rays and Photos
X-rays and Photos are a very important part of making the right diagnosis. Sometimes we can use X-rays and photos that you have had in the past, but we often take a set at your first visit. Our low dose accurate digital X-ray technology provides clear and detailed images of your teeth.

Scale, Clean and Polish
A dentist clean involves removing built up plaque and calculus from your teeth and gums. Removing the calculus is known as teeth scaling and removing the plaque is known as teeth polishing. The hard build up cannot be removed with a toothbrush, but require high tech ultrasonic cleaners to remove. We prefer to use the EMS scalers as these are much more gentle then most dental cleaning brands and warm the water as they are used, to prevent that cold sensitive feeling you can get during teeth cleaning.

Fluoride Treatment
Gone are the days of the old bulky fluoride trays and those sticky gels. Our Dentists use a mousse fluoride that is applied to the teeth. The benefit of the bubbles in this type of fluoride treatment, is the ability to get in between the teeth effectively.

Personalised Treatment Plans
Every patient is different and every treatment plan is different. We gather all the information about your teeth from our in-depth discussion, your x-rays and photos, to create a treatment plan personalised to your needs and your budget. We discuss all the available options, costs and the pros and cons of your treatment choices to help you make an informed decision.

Oral Hygiene Advice
A programme of oral hygiene aids, fluoride and mineral supplements is also carefully tailored to your particular needs. We are also a part of the Oral B electric toothbrush programme, where you are welcome to trial the latest electric toothbrush in our office.

Saliva Testing
If you suffer repeated cavities and dental problems we often perform a free saliva testing assessment. You can read more about saliva testing.
